Batman: The Animated Series, The Phantom City Creative Collection a Must-have for Batman Fans

Two of the biggest names in the Batman print media, Mondo, and Insight Editions have collaborated to bring us Batman: The Animated Series: The Phantom City Creative Collection.

In this is a fascinating tribute to the groundbreaking series, Art studio Phantom City Creative and Mondo have curated a visually breathtaking celebration of the Dark Knight.

Known for their limitless passion and incredible ingenuity for film and television posters, Mondo turned their attention to the highly acclaimed DC show Batman: The Animated Series, which first aired in 1992 and was instantly met with critical praise for its sophisticated writing, bold storytelling and distinctive, noir-influenced art deco style, generating an intense following that thrives to this day.

As someone whose first introduction to Batman was through the Animated Series, this book is a must-have for any Batman collector, or even fan of art.

The Art by Justin Erikson of Phantom City Creative, Inc. is simply breathtaking as Erikson is able to create original work while still preserving the essence of the Animated Series.

“Mondo called me in 2013 to make a poster for the twentieth-anniversary screening of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm,” says Erikson of how the process for the book began.

Creating original art for one of the most beloved series of all time didn’t come without any challenges.

“Making it feel true to my own aesthetic and view while staying authentic to Brice Timm and Paul Dini’s world has been an interesting challenge that only deepens my respect for the material. It’s a tightrope walk to honor creators you respect while maintaining your own identity.”

As to why create Batman-related art, Erikson says:

“I’ve always been a comics nerd, and he’s [Batman] always been a favorite as far back as I can recall.”

Paul Dini, a longtime writer and co-producer of the Animated Series (and co-creator of Harley Quinn), contributes a wonderful introduction. Filled with Erikson’s slick graphic design as well as beautifully rendered illustrations, Batman: The Animated Series: The Phantom City Creative Collection is truly a one-of-a-kind tribute to one of the greatest animated shows of all time.
